Surface Finish Selection Guide for CNC Machined Parts
This guide helps engineers and designers choose the most suitable surface finishing options for CNC machined components based on material type, functional requirements, and application environment, ensuring optimal performance, durability, and appearance.
Material
Compatibility
Different metals and plastics react differently to anodizing, plating, polishing, and blasting processes used in manufacturing.
Functional Performance Requirements
Surface finishing can enhance corrosion resistance, wear resistance, conductivity, and overall cosmetic appearance of components.
Tolerance & Process
Impact
Coating thickness and finishing methods may affect critical dimensions and must be carefully controlled before production.
Inspection & Quality Documentation
Surface roughness, coating thickness, and visual standards are verified to ensure compliance with strict medical requirements.
Explore Our Finishing Capabilities
From corrosion resistance to cosmetic appearance and coating thickness control, our surface finishing support helps CNC machined parts meet functional, visual, and documentation requirements.
Anodizing & Conversion
Anodizing (Type II – Cosmetic Grade):
Provides corrosion resistance with optional colors such as black, red, and blue. Commonly used for aluminum parts like 3C housings and e-cigarette components.
Hardcoat Anodizing (Type III):
Creates a thick, wear-resistant surface with high durability for harsh environments. Suitable for aerospace, automotive, and industrial applications.
Chemical Conversion Coating / Alodine:
Offers corrosion protection while maintaining electrical conductivity, ideal for EMI/RFI shielding in electronic enclosures.
Anamorphism Anodized (Color Gradient Anodizing)
Features: Produces gradient, multi-tone, or color-shifting anodized finishes while maintaining strong corrosion resistance and stable surface durability. The process allows advanced visual effects while preserving the protective properties of anodized aluminum.
Advantages: Enhances product appearance with a premium, high-end aesthetic effect, making it ideal for differentiated product design and brand identity development. It also maintains good wear resistance and long-term surface stability.
Ideal for: High-end consumer electronics, customized industrial housings, and premium aluminum components where both visual impact and surface performance are critical requirements.
Blacken (Black Oxidation)
Features: Forms a uniform black conversion coating on metal surfaces, improving corrosion resistance while maintaining dimensional accuracy. The process does not add significant thickness, making it suitable for precision components.
Advantages: Provides a non-reflective matte black finish with good wear resistance and improved surface stability. It is a cost-effective surface treatment that enhances both appearance and functional protection.
Ideal for: Widely used in precision mechanical parts, industrial hardware, optical components, and assemblies requiring low reflectivity and stable performance.
Hard Anodized
Features: Creates a thick and dense oxide layer through an electrochemical process, significantly improving surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. It is suitable for aluminum parts exposed to harsh operating conditions.
Advantages: Offers excellent durability, high mechanical strength, and long service life under friction, impact, and extreme environments. The surface layer is tightly bonded to the base material, ensuring stable performance without peeling.
Ideal for: Widely used in aerospace components, automotive parts, industrial machinery, and high-performance engineering applications requiring maximum wear resistance and reliability.
Laser Carving
Features: Uses high-precision laser technology to permanently engrave text, logos, serial numbers, and complex patterns on metal or plastic surfaces without physical contact or deformation.
Advantages: Delivers extremely high marking accuracy and durability, ensuring permanent identification that is resistant to wear, heat, and chemical exposure. It supports flexible customization with fast processing speed.
Ideal for: Widely used for product branding, traceability marking, serial number engraving, and industrial identification across medical devices, electronics, automotive, and precision components.
Polishing
Features: Improves surface smoothness by removing micro-roughness, burrs, and minor imperfections, resulting in a clean and refined metal finish with enhanced visual quality.
Advantages: Enhances both aesthetic appearance and functional performance by reducing friction and improving surface uniformity. It also prepares parts for further coating or finishing processes.
Ideal for: Widely used in stainless steel, aluminum, and metal components for medical devices, automotive parts, consumer electronics, and precision industrial applications.
